In 2010, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognized Flowers’ short documentary “Those People” among six other films for the 37th Annual Student Academy Awards. The piece won in a social change category at an independent film festival.

“Those People” is the story of Fred, a man with a mental illness who lost everything that mattered to him: his wife of 24 years, his profession of 20 years and his home of 10 years. After stints in a nursing home and homeless shelter, Fred rebuilt his life by advocating for himself and others in a state with a collapsing system of care. He demonstrates that the power of the  people might be the state’s only salvation.

Flowers also serves as a mentor for GlobalGirl Media, a nonprofit  organization that works with young women from underserved communities around the world. For the ABA Journal’s November 2014 issue, four GlobalGirl reporters, who have grown up in some of Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods, worked with Flowers to conduct video interviews with their family members about guns.
